The town of New Harmony lies about 15 miles south of Cedar City, and they are on full alert. People who live there are still on a 1-hour evacuation alert... when they get the word, they have to be ready to leave their homes within 1 hour. Over 550 structures (homes) are still threatened by this fire. Only 3 homes and 10 outbuildings have actually burned. Hannah has a good friend that lives there. We've been really worried about them. They have over 700 firefighters on this fire - part of them being the Type I teams (worst case scenario national fire fighting teams). It has burned over 12,000 acres, and has been burning since July 25th, and was started by lightning. It was only in the last week that it has gotten out of control due to high winds. It is now, thankfully, 30% contained.
This was the view from our backyard at sunset earlier this week. All the smoke (nope, they're not clouds) made for a beautiful multicolored sunset, but it was still rather scarey. I know we are never in danger here... its just too far away. But it got really smokey - in fact we had to keep our windows closed at night for awhile, instead of letting the cool fresh air in, because our house was smelling like a fireplace! Anyway, such is life in a mountainous community.

Fires both scare me and intrigue me.
So I keep a close eye on these things. Silly woman, right?

Fires are so scary!! Like that one a few years ago that burned up Browse :(.
I'm just glad y'all didnt move to New Harmony now! That would be awful to lose a house in a fire!
We can see the smoke from here in Washington. When we're in LV, we get the smoke from the CA fires. There's just no escape from the smoke, but I'm grateful we're not close to either of the fires.
